How we calculate Bulgarian net pay
The calculator uses the National Revenue Agency's 2026 table of contribution rates, the State Social Insurance Budget Act and the National Social Security Institute's notice on the maximum insurable income — see data sources. Every amount is worked out month by month, because the income ceiling changes during the year.
Social contributions
Contributions are charged on insurable income: gross pay, but no more than the monthly maximum of €2,111.64 to 31 July 2026 and €2,300.00 from 1 August. In 2025 the ceiling was 3,750 lev (€1,917.34) to March and 4,130 lev (€2,111.64) from April. The employee pays 13.78%: for people born after 1959, 8.38% to the state social insurance funds, 2.2% to a universal pension fund and 3.2% health insurance; for people born before 1960, 10.58% to the state funds and 3.2% health insurance. Each contribution is rounded to the cent.
Income tax
Income tax is a flat 10% with no tax-free allowance. The employer withholds a monthly advance tax on gross pay less the employee's mandatory contributions.
The euro and 2025 amounts
Since 1 January 2026 salaries in Bulgaria are paid in euro. For comparison, 2025 amounts are converted to euro at the fixed rate of 1.95583 lev to the euro; contribution and tax rates are unchanged.
Employer cost
The employer pays 10.92% to the state funds (13.72% for people born before 1960), 2.8% to the universal pension fund, 4.8% health insurance and an occupational accident contribution (TZPB) of 0.4%–1.1% depending on the business activity. No contributions are due to the wage guarantee fund in 2025 and 2026 (art. 15(1) of each year's State Social Insurance Budget Act).
