How we calculate German net pay

The calculator reproduces an employee's monthly payroll. Wage tax, the solidarity surcharge and the church-tax base come from the Federal Finance Ministry's official payroll program (Programmablaufplan, PAP); social insurance uses the statutory contribution rates and ceilings. The documents are listed on the data sources page.

Order of operations

  1. Gross pay per month; an annual figure is spread evenly over twelve months. One-off payments such as a Christmas bonus are not yet handled separately.
  2. Category: up to €603 a mini-job, up to €2,000 the transition zone (midi-job), above that regular employment.
  3. Social insurance: the employee shares of health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance, each up to its contribution ceiling.
  4. Wage tax for a monthly pay period under the PAP, using your tax class, child allowances and the allowance for social insurance contributions that the PAP derives itself.
  5. Solidarity surcharge and church tax from the PAP result: the surcharge with its exemption limit and phase-in zone, church tax at 8% (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg) or 9% of a base that takes child allowances into account.
  6. Net pay = gross minus taxes minus social insurance; with private health insurance, minus your premium after the employer's subsidy.

Wage tax from the official payroll program

Every year the Finance Ministry publishes the payroll program as XML pseudo-code, and payroll software must implement it. We translate that XML into our code automatically and without changes, using exact decimal arithmetic and the same rounding rules (down to whole euros and cents where the program says so). There is no reconstructed tax formula: it is the procedure employers use to withhold wage tax. For 2026 the basic allowance is €12,348 (€12,096 in 2025), the employee lump sum €1,230 and the allowance per child €9,756, which does not change wage tax but does reduce the surcharge and church tax.

Social insurance

Employees pay 9.3% to pension insurance, 1.3% to unemployment insurance, 7.3% to health insurance plus half of their fund's additional rate (average for 2026: 2.9%) and 1.8% to long-term care insurance. In Saxony the employee care share is 2.3%, because the Day of Repentance remained a public holiday there. Childless employees aged 23 or over pay a 0.6% supplement; parents with several children under 25 get 0.25% off for each child from the second, up to four. Contributions stop at the ceilings: €5,812.50 a month for health and care, €8,450 for pension and unemployment insurance.

If you have private health insurance, enter your monthly premium for basic cover. The employer pays half, at most what it would pay for statutory insurance, and the premium also feeds into the wage-tax allowance for contributions.

Mini-jobs and the transition zone

Up to €603 a month (€556 in 2025) a job is a mini-job. The employer pays a flat 15% pension and 13% health contribution plus a 2% flat-rate tax; you pay only a 3.6% pension contribution, which you can opt out of.

Between €603.01 and €2,000 lies the transition zone under section 20(2a) of the Social Code, Book IV. Your share is charged on a reduced base that rises from zero at the mini-job limit to your full pay at €2,000; the employer pays the rest of the total contribution on its own base using factor F (0.6619). Pension rights still build on your full pay.

New payroll programs and social insurance figures are added as soon as the Finance Ministry and the social insurance bodies publish them; the version and verification date appear on the calculator. If a result does not match your payslip, tell us — corrections ship as a new rules version.
