How we calculate Icelandic net pay
The calculator uses the rates and amounts Skatturinn publishes for withholding in 2025 and 2026, and municipal tax rates from the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities — see data sources.
Withholding tax
First the 4% pension fund contribution comes off pay, and supplementary pension saving if chosen (up to 4%). On the remaining taxable pay, tax is charged in three brackets: 31.49% up to ISK 498,122, 37.99% up to ISK 1,398,450 and 46.29% above that (the 2025 limits were ISK 472,005 and ISK 1,325,127). The rates combine income tax and the average municipal tax of 14.94%. The personal allowance of ISK 72,492 a month (ISK 68,691 in 2025) is subtracted and the result rounded to the krona.
Personal allowance
You can choose how much of the personal allowance your employer uses, for example if you have two jobs. Unused allowance carries over between months within the year and can be used by a spouse; that is not modelled here.
Annual assessment
The assessment works on annual income: the income tax part of the brackets, with limits times twelve, and your municipality's tax, between 12.44% and 14.97% in 2026. The personal allowance of ISK 869,898 a year comes off income tax first and then municipal tax. The difference from the year's withholding is refunded or collected.
Employer cost
The employer pays a pension contribution and the social security tax of 6.35% of pay plus that contribution, as in Skatturinn's calculator. The default employer contribution is 11.5%; you can pick another rate, as in Skatturinn's calculator. The employer also pays 0.10% of pay to the VIRK vocational rehabilitation fund together with the pension contribution; Act No. 60/2012 sets 0.13%, but a temporary provision sets 0.10% for 2026. Contributions to union sickness, holiday-home and training funds depend on each union's collective agreement and are not included.
