How we calculate Norwegian net pay
The calculator does two things. It works out the withholding in an ordinary month the same way as Skatteetaten's own withholding routine, which is published as open source, and it assesses the tax for the whole year with the rates on Skatteetaten's rate pages for 2025 and 2026 — see data sources.
Table withholding
Pay is rounded down to the nearest hundred and NOK 50 is added. That amount is multiplied by 12.12 to give the annual income the table assumes. The table deducts a minimum deduction of 40.48%, at most NOK 84,216, the table deduction or addition and the personal allowance, then charges tax on ordinary income, bracket tax and the social security contribution at the normal rates, each rounded to the krone. The total is divided by 10.5 and rounded; that is the withholding in an ordinary month.
The table number
Table 8000 only allows for the minimum deduction and the personal allowance. Tables 8010 to 8400 also deduct NOK 10,000 to 400,000 a year, for interest or travel for example, and tables 9010 to 9400 add the same amounts. Skatteetaten picks the table from the details on your tax card; you can choose the same one here.
Tax for the year
The social security contribution is 7.6% of pay (7.7% in 2025). Below NOK 99,650 nothing is due, and up to NOK 143,175 it is at most 25% of income above that limit. Bracket tax is charged on gross pay: 1.7% from NOK 226,100, 4.0% from NOK 318,300, 13.7% from NOK 725,050, 16.8% from NOK 980,100, 17.8% from NOK 1,467,200. The minimum deduction is 46% of pay, at most NOK 95,700 (NOK 92,000 in 2025). Ordinary income less the personal allowance of NOK 114,540 (NOK 108,550 in 2025) is taxed at 22%.
June and December
Withholding is spread over 10.5 months: half in June and nothing under the table in December. Over the year 10.5 times the monthly withholding is deducted. We compare that with the assessed tax, so you can see roughly what you will get back or have to pay.
Employer cost
The employer contribution depends on where the business is: 14.1% in zone I, 10.6% in zone II, 6.4% in zone III, 5.1% in zone IV, 7.9% in zone IVa and 0 in zone V. Mandatory occupational pension is included: at least 2% of pay up to 12 G (G is NOK 136,549 from 1 May 2026), and the employer contribution is also charged on the pension payment. You can choose a higher pension rate. Occupational injury insurance is left out because the insurer sets the premium. Holiday pay is not added either: it is paid instead of salary during the holiday.
