How we calculate Portuguese net pay

The calculator follows the payslip of a full-time employee, month by month, using the withholding tables approved by ministerial order and published by the tax authority in Excel — for 2026 and the three 2025 periods — and the contribution rate of the Contributory Schemes Code. See data sources.

Which table applies

Table I for unmarried people without dependants and married couples with two earners; table II for unmarried people with dependants; table III for married couples with a single earner. The mainland, the Azores and Madeira have their own tables. In 2026, on the mainland, nothing is withheld up to €920 (tables I and II) or €991 (table III).

The formula

Withholding = monthly pay × marginal rate − deduction − extra deduction per dependant × number of dependants (€21.43 in table I, €34.29 in table II). In the first rows the deduction depends on pay itself: rate × factor × (constant − R), so that a raise never lowers net pay. With three or more dependants the marginal rate drops by one percentage point. The result is never negative.

Holiday and Christmas subsidies

They are paid in June and December and withheld on their own: the same table is applied to each subsidy, without adding it to that month's salary. Social security applies to them too.

The three 2025 periods

In 2025 the tax authority approved tables for January to July, lower tables for August and September (to refund in two months the rate cut applied since January) and new tables from October. The calculator uses each month's table.

Social security

Employees pay 11% of all pay and employers 23.75% (34.75% in total), with no ceiling.
