How we calculate Romanian net pay

The calculator applies ANAF's consolidated text of the Fiscal Code, the emergency ordinances on the tax-free amount and the government decisions on the minimum wage — see data sources. All amounts are monthly; the year is built from twelve months, because in 2026 the minimum wage changes on 1 July.

Social contributions

The social insurance contribution (CAS) of 25% and the health insurance contribution (CASS) of 10% come off gross pay. Employees have no contribution ceiling: the base is the whole gross salary. Each contribution is rounded to the leu.

Personal deduction

The basic personal deduction applies only if monthly gross pay is no more than the minimum wage plus RON 2,000. At the minimum wage it is 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, 45% of the minimum wage for 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 or more dependants, and it drops by 0.5 percentage points for every RON 50 above the minimum. On top come the supplementary deduction of 15% of the minimum wage for people under 26 (within the same income limit) and RON 100 a month for each child under 18 enrolled at school, whatever the salary. The deduction is only given at your main job and never exceeds taxable income.

Income tax

Income tax is 10% of net income (gross less CAS and CASS) after the personal deduction, rounded to the leu. At an employer that is not your main job there is no deduction, so the tax applies to net income directly.

Tax-free amount on the minimum wage

If your contract base salary equals the minimum wage, full time and at your main job, a fixed amount is left out of the base for income tax, contributions and CAM: RON 300 a month while gross pay is no more than RON 4,300 (2025 and January to June 2026, minimum wage RON 4,050), and RON 200 a month up to RON 4,600 from July 2026, when the minimum wage becomes RON 4,325. The calculator applies it automatically when gross pay is exactly the minimum wage; you can switch it on or off.

Employer cost

The employer pays the work insurance contribution (CAM) of 2.25% of gross pay (excluding the tax-free amount). Total cost is gross pay plus CAM.
